1. Foreign Minister Teodor Melescanu of Romania will pay an official visit to the Republic of Korea on November 15 and 16.

° Minister Melescanu has chosen the ROK, Romania’s strategic partner, as the destination of his first Asia trip since his inauguration in January 2017.

※ During former President Basescu’s visit to the ROK in September 2008, the two countries adopted a joint declaration on the establishment of a strategic partnership, making Romania the ROK’s only strategic partner in Southeast Europe.

° Minister Melescanu’s schedule in the ROK will include a bilateral foreign ministerial meeting and a courtesy call on the Prime Minister.

2. On November 16, Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha will hold a meeting and a luncheon with her Romanian counterpart, during which the two top diplomats wil discuss matters of mutual concern, including ways to step up substantive cooperation in the areas of information technology (IT), transportation, infrastructure, culture and education; to coordinate with the EU and the rest of the international community on North Korean issues; and to work more closely together on the international stage.

3. The forthcoming visit of Minister Melescanu to the ROK is expected to serve as an opportunity to increase strategic cooperation on the bilateral, regional and global levels with Romania, a member state of the EU and the ROK’s strategic partner.
