1. The 5th Republic of Korea-Norway security policy consultation will take place at the Foreign Ministry on November 9, with Director-General for International Organizations Lee Jang-keun of the Foreign Ministry and Director General for Security Policy and the High North Rune Resaland of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs leading their respective delegations.

2. In the upcoming consultation, which takes place about four years after the 4th ROK-Norway security policy consultation in June 2013, the two sides will engage in extensive discussions on a range of security issues, including the situations on the Korean Peninsula and in Northeast Asia; security cooperation with the UN and NATO; and cooperation in cyber security and counter-terrorism.

3. The forthcoming consultation is expected to contribute to not only enhancing the relations between the ROK and Norway, but also strengthening cooperation between the two countries on global security issues, including the North Korean nuclear and missile issue, by helping the two sides better understand issues of common interest, such as increasing security cooperation between the ROK and Norway, and regional and global security issues.

o Norway is not a member of the EU, but has been joining the EU’s unilateral sanctions on North Korea. Norway has also been actively participating in the international community’s efforts to impose sanctions on North Korea, including by issuing a statement condemning North Korea’s sixth nuclear test (September 3, 2017), banning Norwegians from travelling to or staying in North Korea (September 8, 2017), and submitting a report on its implementation of UN Security Council resolutions on North Korea (October 24, 2017).
