ROK and Mozambique Sign Agreement on Mutual Recognition of Driver’s Licenses

1. The Republic of Korea-Mozambique agreement concerning the mutual recognition of driver’s licenses was signed by Ambassador to Mozambique Kim Heung-soo of the ROK and Minister of Transport and Communications Carlos Fortes Mesquita of Mozambique at the latter country’s Ministry of Transport and Communications on April 30, local time.

 

° This agreement will be brought into force on the 30th day after the two countries are notified by each other of their completion of necessary domestic procedures. Pursuant to the agreement, nationals of the two countries residing in the other country will be allowed to have their driver’s licenses exchanged with ones issued by their host country without further driving tests.

 

° As such, the agreement is expected to improve convenience for Korean companies operating in Mozambique and for Korean nationals staying in the country.

 

There are four Korean companies, including the Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) and POSCO Engineering & Construction Co., operating in Mozambique, with 184 Korean nationals residing in the country (as of April 2018).

 

2. As of April 2018, the ROK has concluded agreements on the mutual recognition of driver’s licenses with 131 countries. The Foreign Ministry will seek such agreements with more countries in continued efforts to resolve challenges and promote convenience of overseas Koreans.

 

The agreement concerning the mutual recognition of driver’s licenses allows nationals of one country legally residing in another to exchange their valid driver’s licenses issued by their home country with those issued by their host country without further driving tests.

 

As of April 2018, the ROK has concluded agreements on the mutual recognition of driver’s licenses with 131 countries: It has brought into force such agreements/arrangements with 23 countries and concluded reciprocity agreements with the other 118 countries.

 

The 23 countries the ROK has such agreements/arrangements in place are: Belgium, Canada, Poland, Ireland, Spain, Italy, Chile, Slovakia, Latvia, Bulgaria, Ecuador, Peru, Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania, Hungary, Israel, Guatemala, Uzbekistan, Honduras, Iran, Nicaragua and the US (22 states).
