Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs to Attend OECD Ministerial Council Meeting 2018 (May 30-31, Paris)

1. Deputy Minister for Economic Affairs of the Foreign Ministry Yun Kang-hyeon will attend the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)’s annual Ministerial Council Meeting as representative of the government of the Republic of Korea*. The meeting will take place under the theme “Reshaping the foundations of multilateralism for more responsible, effective and inclusive outcomes” in Paris, France, from May 30 to 31.

 

* Minister for Trade Kim Hyun-chong of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (head of the ROK delegation), and 1st Vice Minister of Strategy and Finance Ko Hyoung-kwon (alternate head of the delegation) will attend the meeting.

 

The OECD Ministerial Council is the organization’s highest decision-making body made up of ministers from 35 member states. The Council meets once a year. This year’s Ministerial Council Meeting will be chaired by France, with New Zealand and Latvia as deputy chairs.

 

2. In the upcoming meeting, participants will discuss the current state and prospects for multilateralism; resolving new economic and financial challenges through multilateralism; cooperation for inclusive economy and well-being; mobilizing financial resources for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); multilateralism for international trade and equal investment opportunities; and responses to challenges related to biodiversity, climate, and natural resources.

 

o In addition, Colombia and Lithuania will join the OECD at the forthcoming Ministerial Council Meeting.

 

3. Deputy Minister Yun will attend a session on “mobilizing financial resources for the implementation of the SDGs,” in which he will discuss ways the private and public sectors can work together to achieve the SDGs, as well as the roles of governments and the OECD in facilitating such cooperation. The Deputy Minister will also attend a session on “responses to challenges related to biodiversity, climate, and natural resources,” and explain the ROK government’s policies to increase the efficiency of resources and to transition to a circular economy.

 

4. On the sidelines of the Ministerial Council Meeting, Deputy Minister Yun will meet bilaterally with Foreign Minister of Romania Teodor Viorel Melescanu, and discuss bilateral relations, and Romania’s accession to the OECD.
