Vice Foreign Minister Cho Hyun Meets with Washington Times Delegation

1. Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Hyun met with a delegation from The Washington Times of the United States of America on August 29, during which the two sides extensively exchanged views on issues concerning the Korean Peninsula and key issues between the Republic of Korea and the United States.

 

The Washington Times is a politically influential regional daily based in Washington DC.

 

The delegation from The Washington Times included former Representatives Dan Burton and John Doolittle, former Special Envoy for the Six-Party Talks Joseph Detrani, professor at Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) Alexandre Mansourov and officials of The Washington Times.

 

2. Vice Minister Cho explained the ROK government’s efforts to achieve denuclearization and establish peace on the Korean Peninsula in firm coordination with the US; and asked the US to continue to render support and cooperation in that regard.

 

° The Vice Minister, saying that the ROK and the US are working closely together in various areas, including not only security but also economy and energy, asked The Washington Times to play an active role for further advances in the ROK-US alliance.

 

3. In response, the US delegation, commending the ROK government for its strong efforts to seek a peaceful resolution of the North Korean nuclear issue, stated that The Washington Times will actively support efforts to advance the ROK-US alliance.

 

4. Vice Minister Cho’s meeting with the delegation from The Washington Times is seen to have served as an opportunity to help key figures of the US academia and media outlet better understand the ROK government’s policy toward the Korean Peninsula and key issues between the two allies.
