Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs Meets with US Special Representative for North Korea

1. Amb. Lee Do-hoon, Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs, having had dinner with Mr. Stephen Biegun, Special Representative for North Korea of the United States, on September 10, held a meeting with him on September 11. In the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on assessments of the recent developments in the situation on the Korean Peninsula, including the outcome of the visit to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea by special envoys of the Republic of Korea; and discussed in depth strategies that the ROK and the US can implement for denuclearization and peace on the Korean Peninsula by building on these developments.

 

° The two sides discussed a variety of ways that the two countries can seek tangible progress toward complete denuclearization and the establishment of permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula, while maintaining the momentum of dialogue.

 

° The two sides agreed to make all-out diplomatic efforts in the process to move forward denuclearization efforts and the inter-Korean relations in a virtuous circle and on the basis of the firm ROK-US coordination.

 

2. The two sides, bringing attention to upcoming important diplomatic events, including the 2018 Inter-Korean Summit Pyeongyang and the United Nations General Assembly session in September, shared the view that it is of paramount importance to cooperate closely with each other as often as necessary to seek further progress in the situation.

 

° The two sides agreed to communicate and coordinate with each other on diverse occasions and as often as necessary to set concrete strategies by building on the outcome of their meeting on September 11.
