1. During his meeting with Mr. Kwon Sei-joong, Director-General for Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Scientific Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on August 27, Mr. Tomofumi Nishinaga, Minister of the Embassy of Japan to the Republic of Korea (ROK), explained the Japanese government’s position in response to the note verbale from the ROK government dated August 19 regarding the disposal of the treated water at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.
2. The Japanese side explained that at this point in time, there is no specific conclusion regarding the plan for the disposal of the treated water and stressed that the Japanese government has been taking measures responsibly based on scientific evidence regarding the treated water.
° He added that the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs will hold on September 4 a briefing session for the diplomatic corps in Japan on the disposal of the treated water at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.
3. The
ROK government emphasized that the issue should be handled in a way that will
not affect the health of the nationals of the two countries as well as the
neighboring marine environment; and asked the Japanese government to continue
to provide more transparent and detailed explanations to the ROK government and
the international community.
