Korea Announces Plan to Offer Humanitarian Assistance to Sudan in Response to its Crisis

1. The Korean government announced its plan to provide assistance in response to the crisis in Sudan at the “Ministerial-level Pledging Event to Support the Humanitarian Response in Sudan and the Region” held in Geneva, Switzerland, on June 19.


2. Ambassador and Permanent Representative to Geneva Yun Seong Deok announced the Korean government’s plan to offer to Sudan and its neighboring region US$7.8 million, including US$1 million in humanitarian assistance, this year. He went on to convey hope that Korea’s aid will contribute to relief operations in the region as well as a long-term stability and development thereof, adding that the Korean government will work closely with stakeholders of the international community in addressing the humanitarian crisis in Sudan.


3. The meeting attendees voiced concern over the continued grave humanitarian crisis triggered by armed clashes in Sudan, underscoring the need for the international community’s humanitarian aid to Sudan and its surrounding countries. 


4. The government of Korea, as a responsible member of the international community and a nonpermanent member of the United Nations Security Council for 2024-2025 term, will take an active part in the international community’s efforts to help countries facing large-scale humanitarian crises.
