4th Korea-African Union (AU) Policy Consultation Meeting Takes Place

1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea and the African Union (AU) held the 4th Policy Consultation Meeting in Seoul on Tuesday, July 4th. 


※ Chief Delegates: (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) Ms. Kim Eunjeong, Director-General for African and Middle Eastern Affairs / (African Union) H.E. Assoumani Youssouf, Chair of the AU Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC)


2. In the meeting, the two sides examined the implementation status of the 「ROK-Africa Framework of Cooperation」 adopted on the occasion of the 5th Korea-Africa Forum, and discussed areas of common interest, including how to operate the Korea-AU Cooperation Fund and the holding of the 2024 Korea-Africa Summit. 


※ Since it obtained the AU observer status, Korea co-hosted the 「Korea-Africa Forum」 at a ministerial level with the AU five times. (’06, ’09, ’12, ’16, ’22) 


3. The Korean side explained that the government has actively conducted high-level exchanges with African countries based on its policy of strengthening diplomacy with Africa since the new administration was launched in May last year. The Korean side also stressed that the Korean government wishes to establish a mutually-beneficial, sustainable, and long-lasting cooperative partnership with Africa, while calling for attention and cooperation of the African side for the 「2024 Korea-Africa Summit」 which will be held next year.


4. The AU side expressed its gratitude for the continued contribution of Korea to Africa, and suggested further strengthening mutual cooperation between Korea and Africa through the implementation of the 「ROK-Africa Framework of Cooperation」. 


5. This consultation meeting served as an opportunity to discuss ways to reinforce Korea-Africa cooperation with the AU that plays a central role in the integration of Africa, and to raise interest and understanding of the African side toward the 「2024 Korea-Africa Summit」 scheduled for next year.
