1. Ambassador and Deputy Minister for Climate Change Kim Hyo-eun attended, as head of ROK government delegation, the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI)’s 12th Session of the Assembly and 16th Session of the Council, held in a hybrid format on October 26 at 18:00-21:00 (KST).

2. In the meeting, which started with the opening remarks by GGGI President and Chair Ban Ki-moon, participants discussed the Director General’s progress report to GGGI Council and Assembly, operationalization of the Carbon Transaction Facility, re-defining contributing members, addendum to Roadmap 2021-2025, and the election of members to governance organs.

3. Ambassador Kim Hyo-eun stated that at this year's UN General Assembly session, President Yoon Suk Yeol announced the Carbon Free Energy initiative to expedite the achievement of the carbon neutrality goal, and emphasized that the Korean government is strengthening its contribution to low-carbon green growth in the international community, including by increasing green ODA to play the role of a “green ladder” for developing countries, as can be seen in the ROK’s increase in core funding for the GGGI to USD 12 million this year.

4. At the meeting, President and Chair Ban Ki-moon was re-elected as the President of the Assembly and Chair of the Council of the GGGI for the 2024-2025 term by consensus among member countries. With his re-election, he will continue to hold the position consecutively since 2018. Additionally, Korea was reappointed as a member of the Management and Program Sub-Committee (MPSC) for the 2024-2025 term. Korea will actively contribute to the smooth operation of the GGGI governance.

5. Furthermore, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs co-hosted the Global Green Growth Week (GGGW), held from October 23 to 27 on the occasion of GGGI’s Assembly and Council joint sessions. At this year’s GGGW held under the theme “Fast-Tracking Transformative Climate Action,” policy-makers, investors, innovators, and participants from the public and private sectors discussed various ways to achieve the transition to green growth by 2030. In addition, Ambassador Kim Hyo-eun attended the Ministerial Level Panel held on October 26 under the title “Green Transformation of the GGGI Member States and Partners: The Road to COP28” and explained the Korean government’s position on COP28.

6. The Korean government, as the largest donor to GGGI, Vice-Chair of the Council, and host country, will continue to actively support the GGGI’s efforts to facilitate developing countries’ transition to a low-carbon green economy.

7. Meanwhile, Ambassador Kim Hyo-eun met with Minister of State, Union and Environment of Tanzania Selemani Saidi Jafo, who visited Korea to attend the GGGI Assembly Session, and welcomed Tanzania taking steps to officially join GGGI. Ambassador Kim also stated that the Korean government is willing to establish mutually-beneficial, sustainable, and long-term cooperative relations with the African region including strengthening economic cooperation by holding the 2024 Korea-Africa Summit.

8. Minister of State, Union and Environment Jafo expressed appreciation to Korea for actively carrying out development cooperation projects through ODA in various fields, including railway and other transportation infrastructure, and health and sanitation, and hoped to further expand cooperation with Korea.
