REAIM Regional Consultations (ASIA) Held on February 26-27

1. The Republic of Korea (ROK), together with the Netherlands and Singapore, hosted Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Military Domain (REAIM) Regional Consultations (Asia) from February 26 to 27 in Singapore. 

2. The REAIM Summit is a platform for international dialogue to enhance the international community’s understanding regarding the responsible development, deployment and use of AI in the military domain, and to contribute to the promotion of discussions on its governance through multi-stakeholder dialogue. The inaugural REAIM Summit was co-hosted by the ROK and the Netherlands from February 15 to 16, 2023, in The Hague, the Netherlands, bringing together diverse stakeholders from more than 80 countries, including governments, industry, academia and civil society.

 

3. In the run-up to the second REAIM Summit to take place from September 9 to 10 in Seoul, the Regional Consultations in Asia were held to deepen regional understanding of emerging developments of AI in the military domain and to foster open and inclusive discussions among countries in the region. Foreign affairs and defense officials from 12 countries* in the Asia-Pacific region in addition to the co-hosts (the ROK, the Netherlands and Singapore) participated in the Regional Consultations in Asia.

 

* Australia, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Mongolia, New Zealand, Pakistan, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam

 

4. In his opening remarks, Youn Jong Kwon, Director-General for Nonproliferation and Nuclear Affairs, stressed that, amid the rapid advancement of AI technology and growing efforts of countries to use AI in the military domain, it is imperative for the international community to make efforts to establish norms regarding the responsible use of military AI with a balanced approach to its benefits and risks.

 

5. The event was organized together with the Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue (HD Centre) in Geneva, Switzerland, and the S.Rajaratnam School of International Studies (RSIS) in Singapore and joined by experts from the United Nations and leading think tanks.

 

6. The ROK government will continue to seek enhanced regional understanding and engagement by holding a series of REAIM Regional Consultations in various regions.
