Appointment of Special Representative for Indo-Pacific

- Increased engagement in Indo-Pacific region and strategic communication and cooperation with key countries in region and beyond-


1. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs appointed former Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco Chung Keeyong as “Special Representative for Indo-Pacific” to strengthen communication and cooperation with key countries in the region and beyond pursuant to the Republic of Korea’s “Strategy for a Free, Peaceful, and Prosperous Indo-Pacific Region.”


    ※ The Special Representative was appointed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs in accordance with Article 5 of the Act on the Appointment and Powers of Government Delegates and Special Envoys (February 14, 2024).


2. Ambassador Chung has served as Ambassador to the Kingdom of Morocco, Director-General for Climate Change, Energy, Environment and Scientific Affairs, and Minister-Counsellor at the Korean Embassy in the United States of America. With his extensive experience and network of contacts in various fields, he is expected to enhance the visibility and the implementation of Korea’s Indo-Pacific Strategy.


3. The government of the Republic of Korea announced the “Strategy for a Free, Peaceful, and Prosperous Indo-Pacific Region,” its first comprehensive regional strategy, in 2022 and “The Action Plan for a Free, Peaceful, and Prosperous Indo-Pacific” last year. The newly appointed Special Representative for Indo-Pacific is expected to help increase the engagement in the region and enhance strategic communication with key countries on the regional situation and policy responses thereto.
