Korea-Indonesia Foreign Ministers’ Meeting Held on Sidelines of G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (2.21.)

1. Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yul held his first meeting with Minister for Foreign Affairs of Indonesia Retno. L.P. Marsudi on February 21, 2024, on the sidelines of the G20 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. During the meeting, they discussed bilateral relations and key regional and global issues.


2. Foreign Minister Cho extended congratulations on successful concurrent elections held in Indonesia on February 14 and emphasized Korea’s commitment to work closely with the new Indonesian government for the continued advancement of relations between Korea and Indonesia.


3. Minister Retno welcomed the first meeting between the two ministers following their phone call on February 13 and proposed further strengthening the "Special Strategic Partnership" between Korea and Indonesia in various areas.


4. Both ministers agreed to work closely to ensure the smooth progress and success of bilateral strategic cooperation projects, such as the joint development program for fighter jets and Korea's participation in building the electric vehicle ecosystem in Indonesia.


5. Furthermore, they pledged to enhance substantive cooperation in such areas as trade and investment, and infrastructure, and exert efforts to improve the business environment for Korean companies operating in Indonesia, including resolving difficulties related to the import approval system and revising the Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement.


6. Foreign Minister Cho expressed gratitude for Indonesia's unwavering support for peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and asked for Indonesia's active cooperation to ensure that clear and concerted messages are sent to North Korea on key occasions, including MIKTA and ASEAN-related meetings.


7. Both the ministers agreed to continue close cooperation on the regional and global stages, including the G20, ASEAN, and the United Nations. In particular, Minister Cho requested Indonesia's steadfast support in establishing the 'ROK-ASEAN Comprehensive Strategic Partnership' in celebration of the 35th anniversary of the ROK-ASEAN dialogue relations this year.
