- Discussion on ways to maintain and strengthen close interagency cooperation for the success of the REAIM Summit 2024 (September 9-10, Seoul) -

1. With the Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the Military Domain (REAIM) Summit 2024 just 100 days away, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea (ROK) hosted an interagency meeting on June 3 to review preparations for the Summit which will take place from September 9 to 10, 2024, in Seoul. The meeting was presided over by Lee Won Ik, Ambassador and Head of the REAIM Summit 2024 Preparatory Team.

※ The meeting brought together officials of not only the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of National Defense -- the co-hosts of the Summit -- but also the Korea Institute for Defense Analyses (KIDA), the Agency for Defense Development, the Personal Information Protection Commission, the Army, the Navy and the Air Force, among others.

2. Ambassador Lee said, “The ROK’s hosting of the REAIM Summit 2024 in September, along with the AI Seoul Summit in May, demonstrates that the ROK is playing a pivotal role in the establishment of international norms regarding AI which is advancing at a blistering pace,” and urged the related ministries to cooperate closely to achieve meaningful results.

3. Participants from relevant ministries and agencies agreed to actively cooperate to create synergy among three major events that will take place back to back in the presence of foreign affairs and defense officials and experts from home and abroad -- the REAIM Summit 2024 (September 9-10, co-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of National Defense), the ROK-UN Command Member States (UNCMS) Defense Ministerial Meeting (September 10, hosted by the Ministry of National Defense), and the Seoul Defense Dialogue (September 11-12, hosted by the Ministry of National Defense).

4. The REAIM Summit is an international conference launched to enhance understanding of the responsible development, deployment and use of AI in the military domain and contribute to the establishment of related international norms. The inaugural REAIM Summit was co-hosted by the ROK and the Netherlands from February 15 to 16, 2023, in The Hague, the Netherlands. The second REAIM Summit will be co-hosted by the ROK, the Netherlands and Singapore from September 9 to 10 in Seoul, bringing together diverse stakeholders including governments, industries, academia and civil society.

※ The first REAIM Summit was joined by various stakeholders from more than 80 countries, including governments, industries, academia and civil society.

5. The Preparatory Team will continue to maintain and strengthen the close interagency collaboration for the success of the REAIM Summit 2024.
