1. During his visit to the United States, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Kim Hong Kyun held a meeting with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt M. Campbell at the U.S. Department of State on the morning of May 31 (Friday). The two sides exchanged views on a wide range of issues, including the ROK-U.S. alliance, trilateral cooperation among the ROK, the U.S. and Japan, North Korea issues, the ROK-U.S. economic partnership, and regional and global affairs.

2. Both sides concurred that the ROK-U.S. alliance, as the linchpin for peace and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific, is leading the advancement of freedom, democracy and technological innovation. In this regard, Vice Minister Kim expressed gratitude for the active contributions of the U.S., demonstrated by President Biden's attendance at the third Summit for Democracy and Vice President Harris' participation in the AI Seoul Summit.

3. The Vice Minister and Deputy Secretary strongly condemned North Korea for its violation of UN Security Council resolutions through the launch of a so-called "military reconnaissance satellite" on May 27 and for its continued provocations through various aggressive actions and rhetoric that threaten peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula and in the international community. They appreciated that the ROK and the U.S. are maintaining a robust and seamless combined defense posture based on the ironclad U.S. commitment to extended deterrence, and agreed to thoroughly prepare for and respond to any form of provocation, including those in the West Sea, in order to maintain peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula.

4. Vice Minister Kim thanked Deputy Secretary Campbell for his efforts in advancing the ROK-U.S. Nuclear Consultative Group (NCG) and suggested that the two sides continue to actively cooperate for ROK-U.S. integrated extended deterrence.

5. Deputy Secretary Campbell proposed that the Vice Ministers and Deputy Secretary lead efforts to build on the achievements of the historic Camp David Summit, held based on President Yoon's leadership and the shared vision of the leaders of the three countries. Vice Minister Kim responded positively.

6. The Vice Minister and Deputy Secretary took note that the ROK-U.S. alliance is evolving into a global comprehensive strategic alliance, with its domain expanding beyond security to include supply chains, economic security, advanced technologies, and nuclear cooperation. They particularly appreciated the outstanding role of Korean companies in advanced technologies such as semiconductors, electric vehicles, and batteries, as well as the U.S.' support in these areas. They agreed to continue efforts to ensure tangible benefits of such cooperation are shared by the peoples of both countries.

7. The Vice Minister and Deputy Secretary also exchanged in-depth views on major regional and global issues, including those regarding Ukraine, the Middle East, the South China Sea, and the Taiwan Strait.

8. On the afternoon of May 29 (Wednesday), Vice Minister Kim also met with Jonathan Finer, U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor, at the White House to discuss the ROK-U.S. alliance, trilateral cooperation among the ROK, the U.S. and Japan, North Korea issues, and regional and global affairs. On May 30 (Thursday), he attended a roundtable with academic experts hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) to exchange views on ROK-U.S. relations, issues on the Korean Peninsula, and regional and global cooperation.  /END/
