Outcome of the 2010 Korea-CARICOM Policy Consultation

1. The 2010 Korea-CARICOM (Caribbean Community and Common Market) Policy Consultation was 
held in Georgetown, Guyana, on July 13.

ο CARICOM, established in August 1973 to operate as the single integrated market of the region, 
comprises 15 full members, namely, Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, the Barbados, Belize, 
the Commonwealth of Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, Saint Lucia, Saint 
Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago.

ο Korea-CARICOM cooperative relations
   - An agreement concluded in May 2006 on the establishment of a Korea-CARICOM dialogue
   - The 1st Korea-CARICOM Dialogue convened in January 2007

2. Choo Jong-youn, Director-General for Latin American and Caribbean Affairs, attended the Policy 
Consultation as the Korean top delegate, with the CARICOM side led by its Assistant Secretary-General 
Granderson.

3. The meeting dealt with the current situation in the Caribbean region and on the Korean peninsula; 
development cooperation; working together on the international stage; and ways to expand Korea-
CARICOM exchange and cooperation in various other fields.

ο The main topics of the meeting included:

   - The direction of CARICOM’s e-government project, for which the Korean government provided 
      US$1.17 million in support in 2007
   - Opening a joint exhibition hall for CARICOM members in the Expo 2012 in Yeosu
   - Ways to use the Korean trust funds deposited at the Inter-American Development Bank
   - Inviting CARICOM members to the High-Level Forum on Korea-LAC (Latin America and Caribbean) 
     Partnership

4. The latest Policy Consultation is expected to contribute to promoting cooperation and the friendly 
relationship between Korea and the Caribbean region.
