1. As official side events of the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Summit (“the Summit”), scheduled to be held on March 26-27, 2012, the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Power Industry Summit and 2012 Seoul Nuclear Security Symposium will take place on March 23, 2012 in Seoul.

2. The side events will be attended by domestic and foreign experts on nuclear security and nuclear power, CEOs of related businesses, and representatives of NGOs, and are expected to contribute to heightening the international community’s interest in the Summit. The organizers of the side events are gearing up preparations for the successful hosting of the side events as the Summit is now due in 90 days.

3. The organizing committee of the 2012 Seoul Nuclear Power Industry Summit (chaired by Kim Jong-shin, CEO of Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co., Ltd.) has sent invitations to major international organizations such as the IAEA, OECD, and NEA, nuclear powers such as the US, Japan, France, and Russia, as well as CEOs of 125 major businesses in countries that are potential export destinations for the ROK’s nuclear power plants. On December 15, in celebration of the date when the Summit was 100 days away, the Committee invited some 100 renowned figures in the field of nuclear power at home and abroad to its “Nuclear Security and Nuclear Safety Workshop” to gather ideas on the general framework of the Nuclear Industry Summit, including its main agenda and contents.

4. The organizers for the 2012 Seoul Nuclaer Security Symposium, the Korea Institute of Nuclear Nonproliferation and Control and the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security are sharing the burdens to carry out preparations as planned.

5. On the sideline of the events, the Preparatory Secretariat for the Summit plans to encourage foreign scholars and CEOs of major businesses to contribute domestic newspapers, visit to major domestic nuclear facilities, nuclear power exhibitions and technology demonstrations with a view to enhancing the public understanding of nuclear safety and security, as well as promoting the ROK’s nuclear power prowess.

6. The Preparatory Secretariat said, “We expect that the side events will serve as an opportunity for the nuclear power industry to assume a bigger responsibility and role regarding nuclear security and safety, and improve public awareness about nuclear power, thereby restoring public confidence in nuclear power as a safe, cost-efficient energy source again.”
