ROK Elected to UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

1. The Republic of Korea has been elected to serve on the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the 2014-2016 term in an election of members of the Council held at the UN General Assembly on October 30. This is the seventh time for the ROK to be elected to the Council.

2. ECOSOC, which deals with economic, social, development and human rights issues within the UN, is one of the principal organs of the UN, which include the UN General Assembly and the Security Council. ECOSOC consists of 54 members (3-year term) and has broad responsibility for some 70 percent of the human and financial resources of the entire UN system.

3. The ROK is elevating its international status as a responsible middle-power country by serving as a member of the UN’s important organizations (Security Council, Economic and Social Council, Human Rights Council, UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Executive Board, UN Women, UN Refugee Agency Executive Committee).
