1. MIKTA, a consultative mechanism among the middle power countries of the Republic of Korea, Mexico, Indonesia, Turkey and Australia, issued on January 10 a foreign ministers’ joint statement on the fourth nuclear test by North Korea, calling and deploring it as a clear threat to international peace and security.

2. The foreign ministers of the five member states of MIKTA made it clear that North Korea’s nuclear test “was in direct violation of United Nations Security Council Resolutions” and “contravenes international non-proliferation norms and principles under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT)” and once again urged “North Korea to fully implement all relevant UN Security Council resolutions and to refrain from provocative action that could threaten regional peace and security.”

3. In its joint statement, MIKTA clearly expressed the universal unwillingness of the international community to tolerate a nuclear North Korea under any circumstances and thereby reaffirmed the usefulness of MIKTA as a consultative mechanism among the middle power countries that seeks peace and prosperity of the international community.
