Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs to Hold a Series of Meetings with Chief Negotiators of US, Japan, China and Russia for Six-Party Talks

1. Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Peace and Security Affairs Hwang Joon-kook will hold a series of meetings with the chief negotiators of the US, Japan and China for the Six-Party Talks from January 13 to 14. The meetings come after the phone conversations that Special Representative Hwang had with the chief negotiators of the US, Japan, China and Russia for the Six-Party Talks immediately after North Korea’s fourth nuclear test.

o Given the seriousness of the current situation, the chief negotiators of the Republic of Korea, the US and Japan for the Six-Party Talks will meet in Seoul on January 13, and hold in-depth discussions on a range of multilateral and bilateral measures to respond to the latest nuclear test, including drawing up a strong and comprehensive Security Council resolution in a swift manner.

o The following day, January 14, Special Representative Hwang will visit China to meet with Special Representative for Korean Peninsula Affairs Wu Dawei. The two sides will discuss measures to respond to the latest nuclear test by North Korea.

o The ROK and Russia are coordinating the schedule for a meeting between their chief negotiators for the Six-Party Talks.

2. The ROK will make efforts to forge a united international response to the nuclear test through a series of meetings with the chief negotiators of the US, Japan, China and Russia for the Six-Party Talks.

3. The ROK government, in close cooperation with the international community, including the US, Japan, China, Russia and other major countries, will be making a firm response to make North Korea, which directly challenged the international community’s repeated warnings and demands for denuclearization, face consequences commensurate to the nuclear test.
