1. The Foreign Ministry will hold a seminar on trade between the regions represented in the Forum for East Asia-Latin America Cooperation in Seoul on May 19. The theme of the seminar will be mega FTAs and ways to boost trade and investment between East Asia and Latin America.

2. At the seminar, some 40 people, including high-level government officials and experts from FEALAC’s 30 member states in East Asia and Latin America, will discuss the impact of mega FTAs on trade and investment between East Asia and Latin America as well as the progress in the implementation of FTAs by individual countries.

3. Lately, moves to achieve mega-regional economic integrations through mega FTAs, such as the recently concluded Trans-Pacific Partnership and regional comprehensive economic partnerships (RCEPs), have been accelerating across the world. Amid such developments, the seminar has been organized to analyze and assess structural changes that mega FTA could cause to economic cooperation between East Asia and Latin America.

4. At the seminar, the Republic of Korea, FEALAC’s Regional Coordinator of East Asia for the 2015-2017 term and the host of the eighth FEALAC Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in 2017, will lead discussions on mega FTAs, a matter of concern in the two regions, thereby enhancing its standing at FEALAC and contributing to FEALAC’s efforts to vitalize its cooperation projects.
