1. A government delegation from the Republic of Korea led by the Foreign Ministry’s Ambassador for Climate Change Choi Jai-chul attended the first climate conference since the adoption of the Paris Agreement on climate change. At the meeting held in Bonn, Germany, from May 16 to 26, the ROK delegation delivered a presentation on the ROK’s experiences in implementing climate change policies, thereby contributing to efforts to move negotiations forward for laying the groundwork for the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

2. The ROK delegation took part in the workshop for facilitative sharing of views of the countries in the Non-Annex I category of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which serves as the basis for securing transparency for the Paris Agreement. At the workshop, the ROK side explained its emissions trading system (ETS) as well as energy and other climate-related policies. The delegation also held a question-and-answer session with other participating countries, drawing a good response from them.

3. On key agenda items of the Bonn conference, the ROK delegation maintained close collaboration with the Environmental Integrity Group (EIG), which the country is a member of, and actively presented its position on them.

4. On the sidelines of the multilateral meeting, the ROK delegation held meetings with the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Change Support Team and negotiators from major countries, including the US, the UK, the Philippines and Turkey. On those occasions, the two sides affirmed the need to ratify the Paris Agreement as soon as possible and shared with each other their work to address climate change in efforts to enhance understanding on each other’s climate change policies.
