1. The Korean government announced its plan to contribute US$70 million to the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (Gavi) at the “Gavi’s 2023 Mid-Term Review” held in Madrid, Spain, from June 13 to 15.

2. Ambassador to Spain Bahk Sahnghoon appreciated that Gavi is playing a crucial role in promoting global health through the expansion of vaccine distribution and the development of new vaccines. He also emphasized the Korean government’s active commitment to strengthening the global health system, including Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness, and Response (PPPR).

3. This contribution is part of the fulfillment of the Korean government's pledge to contribute US$300 million to the Access to COVID-19 Tools Accelerator (ACT-A) for 3 years (2023-25), which was announced at the 2nd Global COVID-19 Summit on May 12, 2022, to support international efforts to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic and strengthen health security.

4. The contribution to the ACT-A for 2023 amounts to a total of US$100 million: US$70 million is provided to Gavi, and of the remaining US$30 million, US$20 million will be provided to the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and US$10 million to Unitaid.

5. The contribution to Gavi will be used for improving vaccination rates and strengthening health systems (Health System Strengthening, HSS). This is expected to not only enhance the status and role of Korea in international health cooperation, but also contribute to the expansion of operations of Korean biotech companies in the global health procurement market.

6. Participants of the meeting assessed that Gavi has improved the vaccine supply system for numerous diseases over the past decades and contributed to the response to COVID-19 and the expansion of vaccine distribution around the world. They also recognized the need for enhanced multilateral cooperation on global health issues in the face of multiple crises in the international community.

7. As a responsible member of the international community, the Korean government will continue to provide support to countries and people suffering from humanitarian crises and actively participate in international efforts to strengthen the global health system.
