1. The Republic of Korea joined the Indian Ocean Commission (IOC) as an observer following the approval granted at the 39th session of the Council of Ministers held in Seychelles on April 16, 2025.

Since its establishment in 1982, it has actively promoted cooperation among its member states through a wide range of initiatives in areas such as maritime security, climate change, fisheries, and food security.

Korea’s joining the Indian Ocean Commission as an observer is seen as a significant step in deepening the foundation of Korea-Africa cooperation established through the successful 2024 Korea-Africa Summit. It is expected to serve as a catalyst for expanding and strengthening partnerships with African island nations in the Indian Ocean, particularly in areas such as maritime security, climate change, fisheries, and food security.
