Press Briefing

Spokesperson and Deputy Minister for Public Affairs Soosuk Lim

January 2, 2024  14:30  KST

Good afternoon. Let me start today’s briefing.

The Korean government is deeply saddened by the significant loss of life and property caused by the strong earthquake in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, yesterday.

President Yoon Suk Yeol sent a message of condolences to Japanese Prime Minister Kishida today.

The Korean government hopes that the affected areas quickly recover from the disaster and the residents can return to their daily lives as soon as possible.

Next, Korea's third term as a member of the UN Security Council began on January 1, this year.

Korea, serving as a member of the Security Council for the third time, will make active efforts to realize our aspiration to serve as a Global Pivotal State.

Korea, as a Security Council member, will play a responsible role of exploring measures to address serious threats to global peace and security, including the North Korean nuclear issue and the situation in Ukraine.

Korea will also actively lead discussions on peacekeeping and peacebuilding, and women, peace and security, as well as cyber and climate security.

(A question-and-answer session followed.)
