Press Briefing
Spokesperson and Deputy Minister for Public Affairs Choi Youngsam
June 15, 2021  14:30  KST

Good afternoon. Let me start today’s briefing.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Chung Eui-yong will deliver opening remarks at the “Korea-UN 30th Anniversary International Forum” to be held in a hybrid online and offline format on June 17.

The Korean government hopes that the Forum held in celebration of the 30th anniversary of Korea’s accession to the UN will serve as a meaningful opportunity to explore the way forward for the Korea-UN partnership and discuss the future of Korea’s multilateral diplomacy.

Next, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Choi Jongmoon will virtually attend a high-level panel discussion on new and emerging technologies and human rights to be held today, June 15, as a side event of the 47th session of the Human Rights Council and deliver opening remarks.

At the panel discussion to be co-organized by Korea, Austria, Brazil, Morocco, Denmark, Singapore, and the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), participants from governments, international organizations, industries, and academia will discuss the “role of the Human Rights Council in promoting a human rights-based approach to new and emerging technologies.”

The Korean government hopes that the upcoming event will help increase people’s attention to the follow-up resolution on new and emerging digital technologies and human rights, which will be introduced at the initiative of the Korean government at the 47th session of the Human Rights Council to be held from June 21.

(A question-and-answer session followed.)
