Press Briefing
Spokesperson and Deputy Minister for Public Affairs Lee Jaewoong
September 3, 2024 14:30 KST
Good afternoon. Let me start today’s briefing.
I have three things to discuss.
First, Minister of Foreign Affairs Cho Tae-yul will attend and deliver congratulatory remarks at the Korea-United States-Japan Trilateral Executive Dialogue (TED) at Grand Hyatt Seoul Hotel on September 4.
The Korea-U.S.-Japan TED is a private-sector consultative mechanism hosted by international think tanks, such as the Woodrow Wilson Center and Hudson Institute, and joined by political and business figures of the three countries.
The Korea-U.S.-Japan TED was first held in the U.S. in November last year, followed by the second of its kind to come this year during the visit to Korea by a U.S. congressional delegation including Senator Bill Hagerty.
Moving on, First Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Kim Hong Kyun is on a visit to the United States from today to attend the fifth high-level meeting of the Republic of Korea and the United States Extended Deterrence Strategy and Consultation Group (EDSCG).
On the sidelines of the EDSCG meeting, Vice Minister Kim will have a meeting with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Kurt Campbell in Washington, D.C. on September 3, local time.
The meeting is expected to serve as an opportunity to ensure the unwavering and ironclad bipartisan support for the ROK-U.S. alliance and to discuss ways for ROK-U.S. coordination on nuclear and other issues of North Korea, as well as regional and global affairs.
Lastly, Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang Insun will deliver a keynote speech at the Seoul Diplomacy Forum 2024, which will be hosted by the Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security (IFANS) of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy on September 5.
At the Forum themed “Continuity and Changes in the U.S.-led International Order,” participants will present an outlook on changes in the international order and their possible geopolitical/geoeconomic impact on and around the Korean Peninsula.
In her keynote speech, Vice Minister Kang will stress that Korea is making diplomatic efforts to fulfill its role and responsibilities in a way that befits its international standing and national power, in order to safeguard values and the rules-based order.
In addition, she will ask the participants to use the Forum as an opportunity for constructive and active discussions and thereby to come up with the way forward for Korea’s diplomacy amid the geopolitical transition.
