The 3rd High-Level Forum on Korea-Caribbean Partnership, October 22, 2013

I would first like to extend a most heartfelt welcome to all of you. Having just returned from a week-long trip to Central and Latin America myself, I believe I am well qualified to testify the rigours of travelling half way around the world. In that regard, I would like to thank all the distinguished representatives of the Caribbean countries who have braved the gruelling trip to take your presence here. Korea welcomes you.

When Koreans think of the Caribbean, images of beautiful beaches, of fun, dance and music under the glittering sunshine usually come to mind. It is therefore no surprise that the Caribbean is one of the most attractive tourist destinations for Koreans in spite of the vast gulf in distance. As we have a room full of experts on tourism here, I have no doubt that we will see more and more tourist exchanges between Korea and the Caribbean in the near future.

Ladies and gentlemen,

This year marks the 3rd High-Level Forum on Korea-Caribbean Partnership which has been held since 2011 as part of the Korean Government's efforts to promote cooperation with the Caribbean countries.

Given that tourism is one of the areas of greatest interest for Korea and the Caribbean countries, we have selected tourism as the main topic of this year’s Forum. In the Forum that will take place this afternoon, I look forward to seeing a wide range of productive discussions on ways to further strengthen cooperation between us.

Before that, let’s not forget that we have the all important matter of dining to tend to! Indeed, this is where tourism starts in earnest : by delving into local food and savouring the exquisite tastes of local cuisine. Although we do not have Korean food on the table today, I hope you will be able to fully experience our culture and explore the delights of our cuisine during your stay. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank you once again for your continued interest in and affection for all things related to Korea.

In this vein, I would like to propose a toast to the everlasting friendship between Korea and the Caribbean countries. Cheers!
